Half of Every Fence Is Underground. That's the Half We Care About Most.
A fence in Madison County is judged by its pickets and decided by its posts. This page is built around that second fact: what happens below the grass, the two kinds of fence work here, and the towns covered.
Monte Sano Fence Co introduces Huntsville-area homeowners to one local fence builder. That independent firm puts a price on the work and builds or repairs the fence.
What red clay does to a post
The clay under Huntsville soaks up a wet spring, shrinks hard through a dry August, and shoves on a fence post from both directions while it does it. A post dropped eighteen inches into a hole with a bag of dry-pour tipped over it leans by the third year, and every street has a few to prove it. Posts done right go two feet down at the least, deeper at gates and corners, in concrete that was mixed wet and crowned at the top so water runs off the post instead of pooling against it. Wood that meets soil is rated for ground contact and treated against the termites that are the other tax on building anything in Alabama. It costs a little more per hole. It is the reason decades are a fair expectation.
Two kinds of fence
The first-year fence
Builders in Madison, Harvest and Meridianville almost never fence a new lot, so every subdivision that goes up leaves a street of open backyards behind it. The dog, the kids, the plain wish not to share every cookout with four neighbors: that first-year fence is the classic job here. The installation page prices five materials per foot so the choice is made with numbers in hand.
The acreage side
Out toward Hazel Green and Athens the work turns to pasture wire, board fence for horses, and gates wide enough for a tractor and a trailer. The bracing has to hold livestock leaning on it and the gate count has to suit the mower, and none of that is guessed from a subdivision price sheet.
Repair before replacement, when the math says so
A leaning fence is a post problem, and a post can be replaced on its own while the panels you already paid for stay put. Spring wind events knock sections out of fences across north Alabama every year, and panel and post repairs beat a full replacement more often than most fence companies like to say out loud. When a repair is not the smart money, you hear that plainly too.
Straight lines on rolling ground
Yards here roll, so the fence is racked or stepped to follow the grade cleanly instead of leaving dog-sized gaps at the low spots. Gates fail first on most fences, which is why a gate deserves the heaviest posts, adjustable hardware and a brace against sag as standard. The last step is a walk-through: latches checked, stain guidance for wood, and the yard raked out so the only sign anyone was there is the fence.
Eight towns around Huntsville
Madison, Athens, Meridianville, Harvest, Hazel Green, Toney, New Market and Owens Cross Roads, and a separate page for each one, since a subdivision line in Madison and a road-frontage run in Hazel Green are not the same fence.
